Landscape Drawing - Amphitheatre

This piece used Conte Crayons and took 1 1/2 hours to complete.

This piece is very interesting in conveying its structure and its interpretation. The Amphitheatre consisted of 3 rows as the word Amphitheatre in Greek means “on either sides” or “place for viewing”. Replicating this meant having to use shading to create the depth needed for the composition to be correct, and for the viewers to understand the structure of the entire piece.

Using a particular style of shading, the conte crayons helped exaggerate colour towards the scene as we can see that the illusion of having darker objects closer and lighter objects further, was contrasted as the larger area of the Amphitheatre was given a lighter colour and the smaller parts were made darker in order to show the amount of light reaching said areas. This in effect creates an illusion of shadowing which in effect, gives depth.

The trees in the scene also do the same but this time, the contrast between them is normalised meaning darker objects are seemed closer and lighter coloured objects are deemed further. This use of contrast can be a bit confusing but can give a nice sense of arrangement and harmony.
